Information literacy

For the umpteenth time this week, Wendy Muffplaster, the reference librarian at Umpty Library sits in a meeting and comes out with:

"Well of course, we can't do anything with the online encyclopedias because we haven't had any training on them."

And for the umpteenth time this week I quell the rising urge to ask how much training a Professional Reference Librarian needs to use the Online Britannica edition aimed at five to eleven-year olds.

You'd be amazed - it's the same in school, where my fellow teachers baulk at simple things like talking to the pupils one-to-one unless they're trained!

Hee. Hee. Hee.

Along this line Cow remembers showing a fellow librarian how to look up things on the Internet. She wanted more training on it after that.

I honestly wouldn't be amazed: too many of my friends are/have been teachers or social workers. It seems that part of the mind's way of coping with the ongoing development of professional skill-sets is to frantically de-skill on common sense stuff.
