Presto!

Bronwyn is puzzled.

"There were twelve boxes in that pile behind my desk yesterday when I went home. Now there are fifteen. And look what's in these three boxes!"

Promotional material for one of January's Reading Agency events.

What, dear sir, what? Do tell!

Three-score Reading Magazines (cover dated January/February 2008); a bag of bookmarks for The National Year of Reading; and promotional postcards for some novels that were published in March.

No Mr. Stretches or football stickers, sadly. (Be careful what you wish for, Musgrove, they'll be in the next box that magically appears in a corner.)

Is this Reading as in the rather-dull-yet-tolerable town between Slough and Swindon where Boyo, Gyppo Byard and Mrs Pouncer all seem to live??

Yes, we're celebrating it as part of The People's Counter-Betjeman Programme, governed by the Deparment of Culture, Media, Sport and Metropolitan Wristjobs. The intention is to have rehabilitated Slough as a habitable commune by the time of the London Olympics. They didn't want to risk derailing the project by trying to do it all in one bite.

Being slightly serious for once, NYR has been a useful lever for getting a lot of reader development activity past the usual hurdles and bought into by corporate Helminthdale.
