Kraftwerk playing the Macarena

A meal with friends. Inevitably, we swap work stories. Less predictably it turns out that all of us are yearning for early retirement. We are all in our late forties, we should be at the top of our game, and yet...

MTL was 51 when we got together again and he immediately wanted early retirement so we could make up for 30 lost years. It was difficult as he had a really big job but we managed it after 3 years. The first morning he was home we spent an hour just watching the birds in the garden and the hectic pace has continued for the next 30 years. You'll love it.

Late forties, Kev? Good heavens, we're roughly the same age. I hope you'll forgive my cheek, but judging by your taste in films I thought you must be at least 105! ;-)

Oh I dream of retirement. I'll be fifty next year and I've been told I may be out of work in March... so early retirement here I come.

Yup - should have been at the top of our game except nobody told us the RULES.
Now I understand them a bit, and I reckon it's a rubbish game anyhoos.

Ah. This was a problem here too.

Topiary certainly agrees with this post. When all dreams are gone one can only hope to get out of the game with a small monthly check and get by.

Well, Cow is also hoping for unpaid work furloughs--they're talking about this as a cost-cutting measure, and while other co-workers moan, Cow welcomes the chance to NOT spend a day at the office.

Moo!

Pat: I hope I can afford to do it if the time comes. More likely, the way the politicians are talking, I'll be in paid servitude until I'm in my late 70s.

Gadjo: when I say late forties I mean early twenties.

St Jude: that sounds like what's going on in far too many places; hope you get to have some say in the matter.

Macy: it is, but I still have a lingering hope that the rules are there to be broken...

Ms Cow: a commendably positive attitude to a shit situation!
