British pluck

The council is starting to struggle as the combination of cutbacks, redundancies, unfilled vacancies and staff stranded overseas starts to bite.

There is the inevitable corporate invocation of The Dunkirk Spirit.

The welkin rings with hoots of derision and all is well with the world.

Talking of Dunkirk Dan Snow took boats over to France to rescue people stranded by the volcano thingy and the French wouldn't let him continue.
What are they like?

Pat: consistent (for a change!) At any other time all hell would break loose if anyone suggested sending boats over to pick people up without proper border controls.

Is the Dunkirk Spirit the same as the Spirit of the Blitz? Or is which is one always invoked first and the other later?

Let's not forget that shortly - May 10 2010 to be precise, it'll be the 70th anniversary of the start of the Blitzkrieg.

Gadjo: my understanding is that The Spirit Of The Blitz is about Fortitude and The Dunkirk Spirit is about Pluck.

Major: we're planning on doing something in the reference library to celebrate.
