Top Gear

Billy Meredith is in a meeting with Jack Harry and Nancy. They've decided he's taking the Mobile Library out to next Saturday's Urban Village Fête at Pottersbury Road.

"So you're OK for taking the Mobile out on Saturday then, Billy?"

"I guess so. What do you want me to do?"

"How do you mean?"

"What are my aims and objectives?"

.....

"They just stared at me," he told us later in the staff room. "They hadn't thought about that."

"Fancy saying 'aims and objectives' to librarians!"

"I know, but it's nice to know what they think you're supposed to be doing."

"Do you work Saturdays?"

"Only Saturday mornings."

"So what's happening on Saturday afternoon?"

"Nancy says she's busy."

"So it's your problem now?"

"Apparently so. They're dead handy at dropping hot potatoes in your lap and walking away."

Mobile libraries? What will they think of next? I'd stay standing up. Avoids any hot potatoes landing anywhere anything delicate.

I admire Billy's enthusiasm and willingness to think in a modern way, but can't he simply use the "fallback" aims and objectives of a Mobile Library which presumably are to lend books to people?

Madame deF: just so long as there's coal in the bucket to feed the engine the mobile library steams right on.

Gadjo: Jack Harry and Nancy had immediately gone to the fallback position. Which is fine except that the mobile library won't ever be going back to that location so it wouldn't be 'lend' so much as 'give.' I'd lose the will to live if I were to try to make any sense of their fallback-fallback position...

Perhaps one should fuel the mobile by burning old books [or those 1990's receipts!].... surely there must be a grant for this self sufficient conversion away from diesel?!

Anonymous: there'd probably also be an income target we couldn't meet...
