I didn't come all this way in my second-best hat to be fobbed off

I bump into an old colleague I've not seen in a while (you'll remember him Tom). He's been retired a few years from his old Yorkshire stomping grounds and, like most of the retired people I know, he's a damned sight busier now than he ever was at work, freed as he is from compulsory unproductive activity.

These days he's doing work with the library equivalent of International Rescue, helping to plan the Third World's response to the need for public library services in the United Kingdom.

Up to a few months ago that would have been funny.

It's like Christian missionaries coming back to preach to the unsaved here. Maybe I shall donate some books for the cause.

I love the idea of a second-best hat.

Ah categorizing clothes....a best dress, an 'only for indoors' outfit, 'saving something for best'....makes me sad truth be told...wish I'd dressed how I wanted when I wanted and not carried on like that for so many years...thank God my daughter just sees it/buys it/wears it with a smile.
Sorry! did'nt mean to interrupt the light heartedness!

Madame DeF: there's always a market for racy paperbacks.

Pat: we need something to aspire to.

zmkc: it depends on the state of the first-best one.

libby: you tell it as it is, and no need to apologise. The light-heartedness is set to plummet some time next week.
